GeneralA web site to check outI just found this web site: http://www.badmartialarts.com/ I haven't really looked at it, but it seems like it might have some good stuff to offer. Of course, even when we can't practice physically, we should practice mentally. So, during lunch at work, I find stuff to do...
Just practicing...While practicing Tekki Sandan this morning, I was thinking about applications (bunkai), and why we move from side to side in these kata. If you've ever heard me talk about bunkai before, you might have heard me say, "You're breathing the same air!" as your opponents. » read the entire item »
Mental StrengthMonday's Practice was powerful for me, even though I felt very weak...I've just completed my busy senior season, and now am trying to focus again on my training as we only have one month now before testing, and I've been absent from practice so much these past eight weeks... We had an intense practice even though we mainly just covered basics, now that Sensei has been recording our practices I think we are all trying harder to perfect our form and stay strong. » read the entire item »
Seeing is believingMy thanks to Hiroko for video-taping our practices the last few weeks. We have been getting two DVDs a week from her, so sometimes it's hard to keep up with my "educational viewing." However, I find it interesting in a lot of ways. For instance, I have seen Gareth improve markedly lately (although his stances leave something to be desired). I have also noticed many things about myself that urgently need improvement. » read the entire item »

Habit changingI came across this a while ago, but forgot what I wanted to write about it...but I think it had to do with my earlier story about "Don't break the chain". Enjoy! http://zenhabits.net/2007/09/engineer-life-set-up-habit-changes-so-its-hard-to-fail/
More educationLast night, with only 4 of us at practice (in fact, I think perhaps I was the youngest there), we did a lot of jiyu-kumite drills and practice. It was a nice ... vigorous practice session. Hiroko taped an hour of it for future reference. She says that watching yourself, especially if you have "sharp eyes", will help you improve 2 or 3 times faster than without. I don't doubt it - seeing is believing. » read the entire item »

Yesterday's Practice8/6/07 (Monday)
There are nights you feel great (!) after practice and many other nights you feel discouraged or frustrated with your progress. Well, last night was a good one, maybe one of the best dojo practices for me in years. That means there was great enthusiasm and lots of karate fun. There were ten of us with a few beginners. I lead the class. » read the entire item »
Don't break the chainPractice. We should practice every day - we all know this. It's not enough to just come to class for maybe 3 hours a week. However, it's easier said than done. I came across an interesting article quoting Jerry Seinfeld's purported method of getting things done. He makes an X on a big yearly wall calendar for each day that he writes a joke (or whatever goal he sets). » read the entire item »
