This is just me, doing Jion at the end of Saturday practice. Under no circumstances are you to take this as a "how-to" example! I've got a lot of practicing left to do before that!
Thank you Brad for sharing this. I would like to follow up on something you said in class Wednesday by saying "It is a gift when ANY senior does their kata for you". Perhaps as you stated "this is not a 'How To' video" (I personally wouldn't know); but it is always good to watch a more "finished" kata.
For me, it reminds me that if I were to practice as I should, at home - 10 times every day - I could also someday exhibit a more "finished" kata (in which case, I need to refer to your information on "habits"). I always pick up on some detail that I know I am missing in my own katas when I watch either you or Hiroko.
Thank you. I remember (waaay back in the late '80s) when I could say I "knew" 44 empty-hand kata and about 16 kobudo (weapons) kata. Accounting for similarities between the SKA and the Shorin-ji ryu kata I learned then, unfortunately I cannot say I remember more than one or two of the old ones.
However, if I were to stop practicing SKA karate now, I'll bet that in 20 years (if I'm still alive and amazingly enough in good mental condition) I could still struggle through Bassai, Tekki Shodan or Heian Yodan.
The difference is repetition.
You have to put in the numbers to get the result. I may have practiced those old kata 100, 200, even 500 times - I don't know. But I've done many times that of the SKA kata. I'm finally starting to understand Funakoshi's statement of "hito-kata sanen" - three years one kata. And there's a lot more practicing left to do!
Thank you Brad for sharing
