Don't break the chain

Practice. We should practice every day - we all know this. It's not enough to just come to class for maybe 3 hours a week.

However, it's easier said than done.

I came across an interesting article quoting Jerry Seinfeld's purported method of getting things done. He makes an X on a big yearly wall calendar for each day that he writes a joke (or whatever goal he sets).

The idea is that you'll get used to having that chain of X's on the calendar. You won't want to see that chain broken, so all you have to do is make sure you get to put your X on the wall.

Our old Redding Shotokan web site (still up - see it here) had kind of the same calendaring ability. Every day I practice (yes, I still use the calendar), I put up the number of my prerequisite and favorite kata that I do. Looking at that calendar and seeing the days stack up with the 5's and 10's on them makes me feel good. Use the date navigation links on the calendar and go back to May or April 2007. I was on a roll.

For the past few months I've been trying to heal my feet, so Jion took a back seat to Tekki Sandan. But now that I'm aware of the "chain effect", I have to find a way to keep practicing and not break the chain!
