Sayonara, Daniel...

The sad news of godan Daniel Chemla's death came suddenly from godan Jim Sagawa. He died on March 20, 2008 at his home, surrounded by family and old friends. My sincere condolences to his family.

Dear Daniel,

I’m sad and depressed to know that you are no longer with us on earth. It’s hard to say Good-bye, and I truly regret that I didn’t have a chance to say “Thank you” to you again. Because of the distance, I didn’t have many opportunities to see you and practice with you. What a big loss!

You were always way up on the peak above the clouds as an accomplished karateka as well as a notable scientist. For some time, you looked to me rather quiet and cool that I couldn’t have many chances to get to know you better. After a while, however, I started seeing a flash of warm smile on your face, and feeling something very warm coming from you. You were truly a caring godan. About ten years ago, you came all the way up to Redding to lead a practice for us at our dojo. You brought your son Yann and many other SKA members in the Bay Area with you. It was an eye-opening practice with your deep insight as an expert of martial arts. The experience made me want to come down to the Bay Area to attend practices by you, Jim and other seniors.

Last night during our dojo practice, we did knuckle push-ups for you. Thank you so much, Daniel! You will be sorely missed.

Sayonara…
