Kumite practice with Scott Kingsbury 5/5/08

Jim Sagawa visits Redding Dojo

There is something that I am truly happy with and proud of at our dojo these days. Our karate classes are filled with enthusiastic young (and old) people! We sometimes have 16+ students. Most of them are white belts. Our dojo used to be top-heavy for a long time, and had almost no steady young white belts for years. Sayonara, Daniel...

The sad news of godan Daniel Chemla's death came suddenly from godan Jim Sagawa. He died on March 20, 2008 at his home, surrounded by family and old friends. My sincere condolences to his family.

Year-end Practice with Ohshima Sensei

We often tell juniors about Ohshima Sensei and SOD (Shotokan Ohshima Dojo--SKA's state-of-the-art central dojo) in Santa Barbara. During one practice in October, I was talking about Sensei and SOD. All the juniors present showed a very strong interest in going there and meeting Sensei. "When is his next practice? I want to meet him!" How happy I was to hear that!
